BANGALORE, JAN. 7. Eight skywalks modern bridges for pedestrians, with escalators are to be built in Bangalore at a cost of Rs. 4.2 crores. They are being designed and constructed by Geodesic Techniques in association with the Indian Institute of Science. In the first phase, skywalks will be built at Jayanagar 4th Block (at bus-stand complex, length - 31.92 metres; and on Complex-Vijaya College Road - 32.4 metres); Lalbagh West Gate (33.22 metres); on Cunningham Road (23.57 metres); K.H. Road (32.07 metres); Residency Road (32.17 metres); Rashtriya Vidyalaya Road (31.62 metres); and Airport Road (29.47 metres). The cost excludes escalators and hoardings. The Managing Director of Geodesic Techniques, Srinidhi Anantharaman, told presspersons here today that the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) has awarded the contract to the company, and the project will be completed in three months from the date of commencement. The design for the skywalks is ready. Mr. Anantharaman said Geodesic has tied up with PJSI Consultants of Malaysia and Schlaich Bergermann und Partner of Germany to offer contemporary solutions to public transport problems in India.
The company, he said, will make a presentation to the Minister for Industries and Infrastructure, P.G.R. Sindhia, on the options it has for resolving the transport problems of Bangalore. These include monorail and elevated freeway (an additional road built about five to 10 metres above an existing road) for high-speed point-to-point traffic.
