INLD efforts to forge alliances suffer setback

By Rajesh Ahuja

CHANDIGARH, JAN.8. The ruling Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) in Haryana seems to have suffered a setback as its efforts to forge an electoral alliance with smaller parties such as the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Lok Jan Shakti Party are not bearing fruit.

The INLD supremo and Haryana Chief Minister, Om Prakash Chautala had told media persons here earlier this week that his party was open to "tie-ups and electoral understandings'' with parties such as the BSP. However, a senior State-level BSP leader made it quite clear at Sirsa today that there was no question whatsoever of the BSP entering into any form of tie-up or electoral understanding with the ruling party for the upcoming Vidhan Sabha poll on February 3.

This leader further said that the INLD leadership was sending constant feelers to the BSP in this regard.

And the Lok Jan Shakti Party leader and Union Minister, Ram Bilas Paswan, also made it clear today his party would contest the polls on its own and there was no question whatsoever of having any truck with the INLD in the State. He also announced that the first list of his party's candidates would be released on January 12.

Interestingly, the Communist Party of India has also decided to field candidates for the Haryana election.

In an election-related development, a show-cause notice was issued to the Working President of the Haryana unit of the Congress, Randeep Singh Surjewala, by the SDM of Narwana for allegedly defacing the walls in the high profile Narwana constituency.

And the ruling party today took strong exception to the statement of Mr.Surjewala regarding the financial position of the State during the Chautala regime.

A spokesperson of the party said that while making "irresponsible statements'' Mr.Surjewala seems to have forgotten that the Union Finance Minister, P. Chidambaram, had lauded the financial performance and fiscal management of the INLD regime.

The Finance Commission too had appreciated the performance of the State Government, he added.
