Jharkhand seeks additional Central forces

By a Correspondent

RANCHI, JAN. 8. The Jharkhand Government has sought additional forces and a couple of helicopters from the Centre to effectively deal with ultra-Left outfits during the Assembly elections.

The Chief Secretary, P.P. Sharma, who returned from New Delhi, told presspersons here today that he met the Union Home Secretary, Cabinet Secretary and Election Commissioners and apprised them of the Government's constraints in ensuring fair and free elections. The militant outfits had stepped up their activities and given a call for poll boycott. The militants had affixed posters in Chatra, Palamau, Hazaribagh and some parts of Ranchi directing the people to boycott the election.

The Government had demanded 30 more companies of para-military forces. The State had already received 90 companies and deployed most of them in sensitive areas. It had sought two helicopters for survey and air-dropping of forces . Mine-sweeping equipment was also sought.
