Icon's portrait on the block
By Malabika Bhattacharya
KOLKATA,
JAN. 8.
Painter Wasim Kapoor's portrait of the Bollywood superstar, Amitabh Bachchan, will be auctioned in Mumbai in April.
Titled `Great Expectations,' the proceeds will be donated to Mumbai's "Save the Children" organisation.
"I started painting him [Mr. Bachchan] last May. " Mr. Kapoor said.
The portrait will be exhibited for a week in the city's Birla Academy gallery from tomorrow and will also be exhibited in Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai.
The 6.5 ft x 5.5 ft painting has four children in it and is non-luminescent with sharp outlines.
Mr. Kapoor has a series of paintings on street children to his credit.
"I thought of him [Mr.Bachchan] because he comes across as a person who enjoys a warm relationship with children. The pulse polio campaign on TV, for example," Mr. Kapoor said.
