Police to focus on traffic management in Hubli-Dharwad

By Our Special Correspondent

HUBLI, JAN. 8. Apart from tackling crime and handling the law and order situations, the Police Commissionerate of Hubli-Dharwad has turned its attention on regulating traffic.

It is in this connection that it has decided to observe 2005 as the "Traffic Year," K.V. Gagandeep, Commissioner of Police, has said.

A meeting was held at the office of the Police Commissioner here on Friday to explore the possibilities of regulating traffic in the twin-cities, which has become a nightmare of sorts for the people.

Mr. Gagandeep noted that Hubli and Dharwad are on the way to becoming another Bangalore as far as traffic is concerned.

It has become difficult to travel between and within Hubli and Dharwad.

Survey

He said the task of regulating the movement of vehicles will not be left to the traffic police alone.

All officers have been asked to provide inputs. The police will conduct a survey to elicit the opinion of the people, and submit a report on what can be done to improve the situation to the Commissioner of the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation, he added.

Lorries

Mr. Gagandeep said the movement of lorries carrying ore has been banned during the day. Some transport operators have gone to the court questioning the move as Hubli is an important transit point.

"But we are firm in our decision," he added.

One of the solutions could be constructing a bypass road linking the Gadag Road with Gabbur on the southern tip of Hubli, which will prevent the lorries from passing through Hubli, he said.

A proposal in this regard was placed before the Government two years ago. But nothing happened.

We will take up the matter again with the government, he added.

The commissionerate, he said, is toying with the idea of introducing unloading of goods brought to Hubli during the night as is being done in Bangalore.

Mr. Gagandeep said he has drawn the attention of the corporation to the need to build flyovers at some places in Hubli and Dharwad.
