Janata Dal (S) workers told to build party

By Our Special Correspondent

H.D. Kumaraswamy (centre), Working President of the Janata Dal (Secular) State unit, addressing party workers in Shimoga on Saturday.

SHIMOGA, JAN. 8. H.D. Kumaraswamy, Working President of the Janata Dal (Secular) State unit, on Saturday called upon party workers in the district to take the coming elections to panchayatraj institutions as a challenge and work for the success of the party.

Mr. Kumaraswamy, who was on his way to Tirthahalli to attend a party worker's convention, was speaking at the party office here.

He appealed to the workers to check communal forces in the district by attracting youth into the party.

Membership drive

He suggested that the party workers launch a membership drive in this regard. He told them to ensure that at least five party workers are posted in each booth during the election to the panchayatraj institutions.

It is wrong to think that the party can be built either by elders or youngsters alone, Mr. Kumaraswamy said. Any party will become popular among people only if the latter work under directions from the former.

He said his party has not neglected the interests of the minorities or the backward classes. The fact that two Muslim MLAs of the Janata Dal (S) have been made ministers speaks of its secular credentials, he added. He promised that senior and experienced leaders of the party in the district will be considered while reconstituting boards and corporations.

Mr. Kumaraswamy said the Janata Dal (S) will depute senior leaders to the district to improve the party's image.

Medical college

He said the Janata Dal (S) is in favour of starting a government medical college in Shimoga from the next academic year.

The Minister for Health, C. Cheluvarayaswamy, endorsed the statement.

M.B. Shivanna, president of the Janata Dal (Secular) district unit, presided over the meeting.
