Shimoga municipal delegation to meet Dharam Singh

By Our Special Correspondent

SHIMOGA, JAN. 8. An emergency meeting of the Shimoga City Municipal Council (CMC) held here on Friday decided to send a delegation led by its President, B.A. Ramesh Hegde, and the Shimoga MLA, K.S. Eshwarappa, to Bangalore to meet the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, and discuss with him the problems pertaining to water supply, disposal of solid waste, and shortage of civic employees.

Mr. Ramesh, who raised the issue in the meeting, noted that the Director of Municipal Administration had served notice on the CMC for engaging private employees in excess of the stipulated quota in 14 wards.

He said that while Shimoga city is entitled to have only 298 employees, 356 workers have been employed. The delegation will explain to the Government the circumstances under which excess civic employees have been engaged, he added.

The councillors pointed out that according to Government rules, there should be one civic employee for every 1,000 people. They also complained that the employees engaged on contract basis have not been paid their wages for the past two months.

The Commissioner of the CMC, Dharmappa, said the delay in signing a work order by his predecessor led to the delay in paying wages.

He said he will clear the order immediately.

Mr. Ramesh asked the Commissioner to initiate action against contractors for not paying their contribution to the Provident Fund accounts of the employees, though the CMC paid their wages in full.
