Felicitation to Ministers

TUMKURSHIMOGAMANIPALBELGAUM, JAN. 8.JAN. 8.JAN. 8 Government schools and junior colleges in Tumkur district are unlikely to function on Monday owing to a function organised here to felicitate two Ministers.

Rajya Shikshakara Hagoo Naukarara Okkoota, a federation of teachers and employees, on Saturday announced that D. Manjunath, Minister for Higher Education, and Basavaraja S. Horatti, Minister for Small Savings and Information Technology, would be honoured at a function here.

R. Ramalinga Reddy, Minister for Primary and Secondary Education, would inaugurate the function. Teachers and employees attending the function would be treated as "on official duty."

The Deputy Director of Public Instruction, Gangadhara Gowda, was away in Bangalore, and sources in his office confirmed the facility. The sources, however, could not explain how classes and offices in schools and colleges would function if the teachers and employees attended the function.

Staff shortage to be solved

TUMKURSHIMOGAMANIPALBELGAUM, JAN. 8.JAN. 8.JAN. 8 The Minister for Health, C. Cheluvarayaswamy, said here on Saturday that the shortage of medical staff and infrastructural requirements at the Mcgann Hospital would be solved on priority.

The Minister said this during his surprise visit to the general hospital. He gathered information about the needs and requirements of the hospital from the Acting District Surgeon, Vitthal Bodke, and asked him to send a detailed report.

He said that with the Government's decision to recruit 500 doctors, the problem of shortage of staff at government hospitals in various parts of the State would be solved. The District Surgeon urged the Minister to post a psychiatrist at the hospital.

Speaking to presspersons later, the Minister said that the date of the inauguration of the renovated Mcgann Hospital would be announced after discussing it with local legislators. The District Health and Family Welfare Officer, S.H. Satish, requested him to arrange for filling the vacant doctors' posts at the government hospitals at Shikaripur and Bhadravati.

The Working President of the State unit of the Janata Dal (Secular), and H.D. Kumaraswamy, the president of the district unit of the party, M.B. Shivanna, were present.

Five Konkanis to get awards

TUMKURSHIMOGAMANIPALBELGAUM, JAN. 8.JAN. 8.JAN. 8 The T.M.A. Pai Foundation would be giving the Distinguished Achievement Awards-2005 to five outstanding Konkanis here on January 15.

A press release issued by the foundation said that the five outstanding Konkanis, who had been chosen for the awards, were the former Union Minister and MP, Suresh P. Prabhu; the Deputy Governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Kishori Udeshi; the retired IAS officer, P.D. Shenoy; the retired IPS officer, Maxwell Periera; and M.R. Pai (posthumously) of Mumbai. The awards are given annually to outstanding Konkanis in the country for their meritorious services. The awards presentation function would be held at Valley View here, the release added.

Rs. 34-cr. loan for sugar units

TUMKURSHIMOGAMANIPALBELGAUM, JAN. 8.JAN. 8.JAN. 8 The Karnataka State Co-operative Apex Bank Ltd. (KSCAB) will be lending Rs. 34 crores at nine per cent interest to eight cooperative sugar factories facing financial problems following the decision of the State Government to stand as guarantee for the assistance.

Disclosing this to presspersons here on Saturday, the district in-charge and Minister for Agriculture, Prakash B. Hukkeri, said that the factories to get the loans are Raithara Sahakara Sakkare Karkhane, Mudhol (Rs. 4 crores), Bhagyalamshmi Sahakara Sakkare Karkhane Niyamit, Khanapur (Rs. 5 crores), Mahatma Gandhi SSK, Bhalki (Rs. 5 crores), Karnataka SSK, Haveri (Rs. 4 crores), Naranja SSK Imampur (Rs. 5 crores), Bidar SSK, Hallikhed (Rs. 5 crores), Srirama SSK, K.R. Nagar (Rs. 2 crores) and Malaprabha SSK, M.K. Hubli (Rs. 4 crores). Of these, three factories are in Bidar and two in Belgaum district. The loan amount will be released after the sugar factories submit an undertaking on repayment with interest within 120 days in six instalments for which schedules have been prepared. It will be deposited in the account that is jointly opened by the factories concerned with the jurisdictional Deputy Commissioner, he added. Mr. Hukkeri said that the Deputy Commissioner concerned has been directed to send fortnightly reports on sale of sugar and particulars of remittances to the Government.
