Air Deccan's fleet acquisition plans

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, JAN. 8. With its plans of growing up and to cope with the demand, Air Deccan has planned to have at least 100 flights by the end of January. Hence, the Avions de Transport Regional (ATR) has provided 30 new ATR 72-500 aircraft (72-seat configuration) and six second-hand aircraft (three ATR 42-500 and three ATR 72-500) to Air Deccan.

According to the Managing Director of Air Deccan, Captain Gopinath, deliveries of the aircraft will begin this year and will be spread over five years at the rate of 6-8 aircraft a year.

The sticker price of each of these aircraft is $17.6 million and the guarantee provided by export credit agencies such as SACE and COFACE based in Italy and France helps acquire money from banks. These come with simulators in a comprehensive package.

He said that the ATR aircraft were chosen because they were most suitable for Indian market for short haul routes.

The Chief Executive Officer of ATR, Filippo Bagnato, said that after Air Deccan started its operations with the used ATR aircraft in 2003, the airline has confirmed that these aircraft were suitable for the Indian market. The ATR 72-500 aircraft gave the lowest seat mile costs in its category and the high degree of commonality between the ATR 42 and ATR 72 aircraft result in major cost savings and flexibility.

Working on a global partnership with Air Deccan, he said that training centres would be created in Bangalore and well- advanced integrated product support would be provided.

The French-Italian aviation company Avions de Transport Regional (ATR) is thinking of reviving a MoU with Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) to source systems and components for its passenger aircraft.
