Foul play suspected in prisoner's death

By Our Special Correspondent

SALEM, JAN. 8. Tension prevailed in the Salem Government Medical College Hospital for nearly three hours this morning following the death of a remand prisoner last night.

Alleging foul play in the death of Kaveri (41) of Nayakkankadu near here, his relatives including his wife Selvi refused to accept the body. The Collector, A. Sukumaran, asked the Salem Revenue Divisional Officer, Dakshinamurthy, to inquire into the cause of the death.

The police said Kaveri was arrested on charges of selling illicit liquor at Kondalampatti near here on January 3. He was remanded to judicial custody and lodged in the Salem Central Prison. On Friday morning, he developed nausea and severe stomach pain and was rushed to the hospital. Selvi (36) told The Hindu that her husband had quit selling illicit liquor four years ago when the couple adopted a girl child.

The RDO ordered the hospital administration to hold a post-mortem and conducted inquiries with Selvi, other relatives and policemen. He submitted a preliminary report to the Collector on the death and sought his permission to hold a detailed inquiry.
