`Dial your SP'

ADILABAD: The `dial your SP' programme got off to a good start at 12 noon on Saturday as 13 calls were received during the one hour from various parts of the district.

The Superintendent of Police, Kripa Nand Tripathi Ujela, and the Additional SP (administration), Satyanarayana, manned the telephone listening and noted down complaints. There were complaints related to matka gambling in Adilabad town and its ramifications in the slum areas and gambling in Bhainsa with the local police turning a blind eye to the issue allegedly after receiving `mamools'. There were also complaints related to police constables, including a gunman of the Adilabad MP, T. Madhusudan Reddy, refusing to clear their personal debts.

`Sudarsanam'

ADILABAD: `Sudarsanam' counter was inaugurated at the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam kalyana mandapam here on Saturday by the Adilabad MLA, C. Ramachander Reddy. The counter would function between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. every day. Devotees, who want to book Tirumala dharshanam tickets should do so at least three days in advance and within 60 days of their visit. Each ticket costs Rs. 50 and two laddus are given free of cost on the ticket. Children aged below 12 years do not require darshanam ticket.

Seminar on AIDS

ADILABAD: An awareness seminar on AIDS was organised by the Directorate of Field Publicity at Chincholi near Nirmal town on Saturday. The chief guest of the programme, the Project Director of the District Women and Child Development Agency, V. Ramulu, underscored the need for creating an AIDS-free society in Adilabad. He said curbing the negative impact of Western culture among youth was necessary. The field publicity officer, I. Hari Babu, presided.

tsunami-hit

WARANGAL: Members of the Satya Sainya youth welfare society, Bhupalpalli donated 180 kg of rice, clothes and bed sheets for the tsunami-affected.

The youth handed over the relief material to D. Sanath Kumar of Red Cross Society here today. A senior advocate, Nellutla Bhaskar Rao of Warangal donated Rs 25,000 to the CM's relief fund. He handed over the cheque to district Collector, N. Siva Sankar, on Saturday.

Welfare scheme renamed

Hyderabad: The World Bank-aided Velugu project and all schemes connected with self-help groups such as DWCRA have been clubbed and renamed `Indira Kranthi Patham'. The logo of the new name was released by the Minister for Rural Development Minister, D. Srinivas, here, on Saturday.

The Minister later told newsmen that bringing of both programmes under one roof would ensure effective implementation. The new name was more apt because these programmes carried the concepts and visions of Indira Gandhi who had toiled for the poor throughout her life and launched several such projects.

Congress poser to ex-Minister

Hyderabad: The APCC secretaries -- G. Rudraraju and J. Mallika -- have asked the former Minister, N. Janardhan Reddy, to justify the expenditure of Rs. 7 lakhs incurred on his present quarters in the Old MLAs' quarters (No.407 and 408) by the Government.

Dr. Janardhan Reddy had no qualms in making the Government incur the huge expenditure but had the gumption to question the expenditure on the official residence of the Chief Minister, they said in a statement on Saturday.

Maoists to help tsunami-hit

ELURU: The CPI (Maoists) has decided to take a plunge in relief operations in the tsunami-affected areas in the State.

The party spokesman, D. Amar, said on Saturday that rice worth of Rs. 50 lakh would be distributed to the affected families at the rate of 25 kg per family. The party is deputing its teams to the tsunami-affected districts of West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur and Nellore for undertaking relief operations.

A 10-member team from the CPI (Maoists) would arrive West Godavari district on January. Under the party banner, rice would be distributed to about 4,000 families in 10 coastal habitations in Narsapur revenue division.

BJP opposes TTD move

HYDERABAD: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has opposed the move to release Rs. 10 crores from the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) to the Tirupati Urban Development Authority (TUDA) for taking up underground drainage works in the temple town.

The BJP secretary, N. V. V. S. Prabhakar, at a press conference here on Saturday flayed the TTD Board, which resolved to divert temple funds for drainage works. He wondered why only TTD funds were being diverted when no other minority religious bodies were doing so.

Mr. Prabhakar opposed move to allocate Rs. 30 crores to Cuddapah district for drinking water projects. He said the TTD Board was doing this only to please the Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy.

Phone-in counselling

HYDERABAD: Indira Gandhi National Open University will hold a phone-in radio counselling programme on `learning at a distance' on January 9 from 4.p.m. to 5 p.m. It will include use of learning material, preparation of answering assignments and planning and implementation of proper time utilisation.

The programme is intended for the new students of 2005, but others interested in distance and open learning may avail themselves of the counselling which will be in teleconferencing mode.

Search on for missing girl

Kakinada: The three town police have launched a search for Mandapalli Devi (14), a dalit girl, who has been missing from her house in Bapujinagar area of Jagannadhapuram here since December 21. The police said on Saturday that the girl's father, China Satyam, lodged a complaint on January 2.

Two farmers end life

KURNOOL: Two farmers committed suicide in Kurnool district on Saturday. Venkateswara Reddy (28) reportedly committed suicide at Sidhanagattu village under the Peapuly police station limits while Anjanaiah, 45 ended life by hanging himself at Erigeri in Kautalam mandal due to financial problems.

Prisoner commits suicide?

NIZAMABAD: A convicted criminal, Bojanna (35) of K. Vennel village in Nandipet mandal, was suspected to have committed suicide by hanging to iron bars of the barrack wherein he was kept in the district prison in the early hours of Saturday. In a case of house burning registered in the Balkonda police station limits, Bojanna was sentenced to five-year rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs.1000 by the fast track court on January 6.

The Revenue Divisional Officer, Krishna Mohan Reddy, conducted the inquest and the body was handed over to Bojanna's family members.

Former Minister dead

VISAKHAPATNAM: The former Minister and senior Congress leader of Srikakulam district, Gorle Sriramulu Naidu, died here on Saturday following prolonged illness. He was 75 and is survived by wife and four daughters. Mr. Naidu served as the Irrigation Minister in Marri Channa Reddy Cabinet and had set a record by serving as the Srikakulam Zilla Parishad Chairman for 18 years.

The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, condoled the death of Sriramulu Naidu.

He conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family.

Dry weather prevails

Hyderabad: Dry weather prevailed in the State on Saturday. The minimum temperature changed a little all over.

The lowest night temperature for the 24-hour period ending this morning was recorded by Arogyavaram at 14 degree Celsius. There will be mainly clear sky in the State on Sunday, according to forecast by the State Met Office here.

Letter writing

TIRUPATI: As part of the 150th year celebrations of Indian Post Office, the Department of Posts is conducting a letter writing competition on the theme `Our postal services' on January 16 (Sunday) at the office of the Superintendent of Post Offices (first floor of HPO) here. School students will be divided into two groups according to their age i.e., up to nine years and 10-15 years.The Superintendent, K. Chandrasekhar, said applications accompanied by a certification of birth date by the Headmaster/Principal, should reach his office by January 12.

`Rahu Ketu' puja

TIRUPATI: The Chairman and Managing Director of Andhra Bank, T. S. Narayanasami, performed `Rahu Ketu puja' at the Siva temple at Srikalahasti on Saturday. Arriving to a ceremonial welcome with `Purnakumbham' amid chanting of Vedic hymns, he offered prayers at the shrines of Lord Srikalahastiswara and Goddess Gnana Prasunambika.

He later took part in `Rahu Ketu puja', which devotees prefer to perform on Saturdays at the temple to ward off evil and bring prosperity.

CUDDAPAH: Judges and judicial employees contributed Rs. 97,846 for aiding tsunami-hit people. The District Sessions Judge, T. Lakshmana Rao, handed over a DD for the amount to the Collector, Jayesh Ranjan. The Y. Subbi Reddy Memorial College Principal, C. Sambasiva Reddy, the NCC Officer, Vijaya Bhaskar, and students donated Rs. 20,000.
