VISAKHAPATNAM, JAN. 8. The Uttarandhra Adhyana Vedika (UAV) has welcomed the decision of the State Government to undertake work on Vamsadhara phase-II at a cost of Rs.850 crores. After a meeting of the vedika members, the UAV president, K.S. Chalam, said on Saturday that the decision of the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, would go a long way in changing the face of backward Srikakulam district. Prof. Chalam said that this was a long-felt need of the farmers of Srikakulam and appreciated the Government's `innovative' decision to alter technically the project design and get approval from the Government of India without encountering any problem from Orissa. The vedika also took a decision to ask the Government to launch work on the Godavari left canal to improve irrigation in the three districts. Referring to the decision on setting up of Volkswagen car unit in the city at a cost of one billion Euro, the members said that the unit would help generate employment opportunities for the local. Earlier, they expressed satisfaction over relief and rehabilitation measures being undertaken by the Government in the tsunami-battered areas.
