NAGERCOIL, JAN 8. Over 3,000 inland fisherfolk, including women, staged a road roko before the Collectorate here today demanding that the Government distribute relief material to them. There are 4,906 inland fisherfolk families living in over 81 villages in the district. They sell fish on streets and at the markets. They have been put to untold hardship as fishermen have not set sail for the last 13 days. The protesters squatted on the road for more than five hours urging officials to issue 60 kg rice and three litres of kerosene to them until the resumption of fishing activity. They also demanded that the Government announce relief to them similar to that of the marine fishermen. Traffic on the Thiruvananthapuram - Kanyakumari national highway was disrupted for over six hours and vehicles were diverted. They dispersed after officials assured them that action would be taken within a couple of days regarding the issue of relief material. The Director of Inland Fishermen Federation, Fr. J. Innocent; Member of Parliament, A.V.Bellarmine; and Era. Bernard, president, DMK fishermen wing, among others participated in the agitation.
