BANGALORE, JAN. 8. The former Chairman of the Legislative Council, B.L. Shankar, said here today that winning elections without regard for morality, values and sacrifice is the reason for the ills plaguing the country. Inaugurating a two-day convention of representatives of constructive organisations in the State organised by the Karnataka Gandhi Smaraka Nidhi, Mr. Shankar said Mahatma Gandhi and Jayaprakash Narayan commanded respect because of their high moral standing. They resisted temptations of acquiring power throughout their public life. Mr. Shankar, who is the Chairman of the Karnataka Chitrakala Parishat, said democracy is the best form of governance. But those at the helm of affairs have little concern for values and morality. Because of this, they are unable to lead the masses towards progress. Referring to the theme of the convention, "The role of constructive organisations in solving socio-economic-cultural problems", he said Mahatma Gandhi used truth and non-violence as his weapons to combat the evils that dogged society. Gandhiji and JP gave new dimension to people's struggles. But the leaders today are unable to take the masses with them though they wield power. Mr. Shankar regretted that some people argue whether spending money on education and culture is productive, which shows the decline in the level of thinking. The lack of morality, discipline and commitment to the cause led to corruption. The youth need orientation and guidance to follow a disciplined life and it is here the role of constructive organisations assumes important, he said. H. Srinivasaiah, President of the Karnataka Gandhi Smaraka Nidhi, welcomed the gathering. Gopinathan Nair, Vice-President, Central Gandhi Smaraka Nidhi, and H.R. Dase Gowda, Secretary of the State unit, were present. INA Rama Rao and other Gandhians participated in the sessions held as part of the convention.
