State likely to have science academy

KARWAR JAN. 8. The Minister for Science, Technology and Small Savings, Basavaraj Horatti, said today that the State Government proposes to set up a science academy to encourage research in science. He told presspersons here that a task force of scientists will be formed in the State to advice the Government on promotion of science. A science park is coming up in Dharwad. Sixteen science centres are functioning in the State. One more centre will be set up in Karwar shortly. These centres had been receiving a grant of Rs. 2.1 crores till now. There is a proposal to provide an additional grant of Rs. 1 crore to them from this year. Many autonomous bodies and non-governmental organisations, including the State Science and Technology Board, the Rajya Vijnana Parishat, the Drought Relief Monitoring Cell and Nehru Planetarium, are spreading the knowledge of science among the people. The Minister said there is a proposal to provide financial help to produce documentaries to educate the people on scientific methods of road and drainage development, and water management and cultivation. On the achievement in small savings, he said the target for the current financial year is Rs. 2,600 crores. The Government is confident of mobilising Rs. 3,000 crores under the scheme by the end of the year. There are 40,000 NSC agents in the State, getting a commission of Rs. 20 crores. The commission is being paid by the Bangalore office. It will be paid to them through a committee headed by the Deputy Commissioner in each district, he said.

S.K. Ramachandra Rao

DHARWAD JAN. 8. Karnatak University will be conferring honorary doctorate on four persons during its annual convocation on January 19. A meeting of the Academic Senate of the university selected S.K. Ramachandra Rao, scholar; S.C. Sharma, Principal of the R.V. Engineering College, Bangalore, for his contribution to engineering education; K.S. Nisar Ahmed, Kannada poet; and Annadanishwar Shivayogi Swamiji of Mundargi for his contribution to education. M.R. Srinivasan, former Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, will deliver the convocation address.

Plea to Congress leadership

BANGALORE JAN. 8. The former Minister, S. Ramesh, today urged the State Congress leadership to give equal prominence to all loyal workers of the party in order to strengthen it so that it could return to power on its own. In a press release, he said the office-bearers of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, former ministers and former presidents of the KPCC had discussed the reasons for the defeat of the candidates from the party in the recent elections. They had met the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, and apprised him of the discussions held during the meeting. He made an indirect reference to the kind of treatment being meted out to loyal Congress workers by the coalition Government.

Awareness on cancer

BANGALORE JAN. 8. The Bangalore Institute of Oncology, in association with the Banashankari Charitable Trust, will organise a walkathon to promote awareness on cancer here on Sunday. Vishnuvardhan, actor, will flag off the walkathon in front of the institute, off Lalbagh Double Road. It will end at the National College, Jayanagar. Syed Kirmani, former cricketer, will take part in the event. A cricket match will be organised on the occasion. "Sneha Loka", a team led by Mr. Vishnuvardhan, and BIO XI led by Rajeshmurthy, doctor, will participate in it.

Promotion for school staff

HUBLI JAN. 8. Music, dance, drama and art teachers and non-teaching employees will now get promotion after 20 years of service, following a Government notification issued on December 21. In a press note issued here today, the Dharwad district unit of the Karnataka State Secondary School Employees' Association congratulated Basavaraj Horatti, Minister for Science and Technology and President of the association, on his efforts to solve the long-pending problem of employees of secondary schools who had been denied time-bound promotion. The unit urged the Minister to take steps to get clearance for all the pending bills related to the employees of aided schools. It appealed to him to persuade the Government to lift the ban on recruitment.

Applications invited

BANGALORE JAN. 8. The Directorate of Tribal Welfare has invited applications for financial assistance, from students from the Scheduled Tribes for pursuing higher studies in universities abroad. A press release issued here today said that eligible candidates will be given up to Rs. 3.5 lakhs a year or Rs. 10 lakhs for the entire course. Training programme

DHARWAD JAN. 8. A one-month training programme in entrepreneurship has been organised by the Centre for Development of Entrepren eurship in Karnataka, the District Industries Centre and the Union Ministry of Food Processing from the first week of February.

Applications

BIDAR JAN. 8. Applications have been invited from doctors for appointment in various hospitals in Bidar district on contract basis. According to a release, seven vacancies for general duty doctors will be filled. Apart from these, three lady doctors, two anaesthetics, two physicians, and two general surgeons will also be appointed.

Two copies of the application, with copies of the prescribed documents and two passport-size photographs should be submitted to the office of the Deputy Commissioner by January 15, a release said.

Gold cards

BELLARY JAN. 8. The State Bank of India (SBI) Commercial Branch presented Gold Cards to leading exporters in the city on Thursday.

Mahapara Ali, General Manager of SBI, Bangalore, presented the cards to the Kurgodu MLA, N. Suryanarayan Reddy, who heads Sri Raghavendra Enterprises dealing in granite, S.K. Modi of Vibhuti Gudda Mines, and Ramesh Gopal of Vijayakrishna Granites for their excellent performance in exports.

The gold card holders can avail themselves of loans at discounted interest rates and 20 per cent increase in the amount of finance every year.

Music concert

BELLARY JAN. 8. Virupakshappa Ittigi, lecturer, Department of Music, Kannada University Hampi, will present a Hindusthani vocal concert at the Cultural Complex at 6.30 a.m. on Sunday as part of "Udyaanadalli Udayaraaga," a cultural programme of the department.

The Bellary Music Club, which is celebrating its silver jubilee, has also organised a vocal recital by Sahana Ramachandra and party from Bangalore on January 9.

The programme has been organised as part of Sri Purandhara Dasa and Sri Tyagaraja Aradhana. It will be held at the Sri Raghavendra Swami Kalyan Mantap in Satyanarayanpet.

Two drown

BIDAR JAN. 8. Two young boys drowned when they were trying to learn to swim in a lake in Dhannura (S) in Bhalki taluk on Saturday.

The police said that Nayeem Gafur (12), who was learning to swim, drowned in the lake, pulling along Mohsin Salim (17), who was teaching him.

Their mothers were washing clothes on the bank but nobody was around to save the youths. The two women did not know to swim, the police said.

The bodies were fished out in the evening. Salim is from Thanakushnoor in Aurad taluk and had come to Dhannura (S) along with his mother to attend a wedding. A case has been registered at the Dhannura police station.

Workshop

Mysore Jan. 8. Yuvaraja's College and the Centre for Information Science and Technology (CIST) will conduct a five-day national workshop on Bioinformatics from January 20 to 24, according to a press release.

The workshop is open to college and university teachers belonging to the biological science discipline in addition to basic knowledge of molecular biology and computers.

The registration fee is Rs.1,000 and the last date for submitting applications is January 15, 2005.

Coaching classes

Mysore Jan. 8. The Institution of Engineers, Mysore chapter, will conduct coaching classes for AMIE, section A and B.

In Section A, all subjects of diploma scheme will be covered as per the new syllabus while for the Section B engineering management for all schemes will be taught.

Classes will commence from January 15 and will be held between 6.30 p.m. and 8.30 p.m.

Student's distinction

Mysore Jan. 8. Manjunath Hegde, a student of the city-based Omkarmal Somani College has won the first prize and bagged the gold medal at a national level Sanskrit elocution competition held at Kancheepuram in Tamil Nadu.

He also bagged a silver medal in problem solving.
