Paswan's call to Congress
By K. Balchand
PATNA,
JAN. 8.
In a bid to take advantage of the rift between the Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) over seat-sharing in Jharkhand, the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) chief, Ram Vilas Paswan, has invited the former to form a new alliance in Bihar for the Assembly elections here.
Even as he made a public offer to the Congress, Mr. Paswan received a phone call from the Janata Dal (United) leader, Nitish Kumar. During the conversation, the LJP chief reiterated his request to Mr. Kumar that he come out of the National Democratic Alliance as there was no question of his having any relations with the Bharatiya Janata Party.
According to Mr. Paswan, the best alternative would be a coalition of secular forces comprising the LJP, the Congress, the JD (U) and the Left parties, but felt that even if either the JD (U) or the Congress were to join hands with him, the RJD would find itself under pressure.
