KANNUR, JAN. 8. The Students Federation of India (SFI) today called for a Central legislation to ensure social control over the professional education sector. The SFI all-India president, K.K. Ragesh, said at a press conference here that the SFI would organise a march to the Vidhan Soudha in Bangalore on March 10 when State Education Ministers would attend a meeting there. The march would highlight the demand for a Central legislation to regulate the professional education institutions, he said. Mr. Ragesh said that the National Commission for Minority Education Institutions Act 2004 would only help protect the interests of the affluent sections among the minorities. Referring to the new ordinance on universities, he alleged that the United Democratic Front Government was pursuing policies aimed at stifling democracy on campuses, while the United Progressive Alliance Government had decided to withdraw the `anti-democratic' Model Act for Universities introduced by the Vajpayee Government.
