BANGALORE, JAN. 8. To attract young talent to the all-India civil services, the Union Government is thinking of reducing the maximum age limit from 30 years to 26 years for general category candidates. The Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, will announce the decision in a month, according to A.N. Tiwari, Secretary, Union Department of Personnel and Training. Delivering the keynote address on "Civil service reforms and initiatives in e-governance in the southern States," at the Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC) here on Saturday, he said the P.C. Hota Committee has submitted a report on "Civil service reforms" to the Union Government. For all-India civil services, the minimum and maximum age limits will be 21 years and 26 years in the case of general candidates as against 21 years and 30 years at present. There will be a five-year (21 years and 31 years) relaxation in the age limit for candidates from the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, and a three-year relaxation (21 and 29) for candidates from Other Backward Classes, he said. The previous government raised the upper age limit from 26 years to 30 years for general category candidates. The committee report has recommended a rigorous review of service records of civil servants after 15 years of service and supervision of the work of junior functionaries by officers of higher civil service.
