Prisoner's death sparks tension
By Our Special Correspondent
SALEM,
JAN. 8.
Tension prevailed in the Salem Government Medical College Hospital for nearly three hours this morning following the death of a remand prisoner last night.
Alleging foul play in the death of Kaveri (41) of Nayakkankadu near here, his relatives including his wife Selvi refused to accept the body.
The Collector, A. Sukumaran, asked the Salem Revenue Divisional Officer, Dakshinamurthy, to inquiry into the cause of the death under the Police Standing Order 151.
The police said Kaveri was arrested on charges of selling illicit liquor at Kondalampatti near here on January 3. He was remanded to judicial custody and lodged in the Salem Central Prison. On Friday morning, he developed nausea and severe stomach pain and was rushed to the hospital.
