NCC R-Day camp inaugurated

NEW DELHI JAN. 8. The Vice-President, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, today inaugurated the National Cadet Corps (NCC) Republic Day Camp-2005 at Garrison Parade Ground here.

Addressing the cadets, Mr. Shekhawat said: "You are the future of our nation and with discipline, determination and devotion you will be able to thwart any external or internal threat to the country's security."

He also emphasised that discipline and education were prerequisites for sustainable progress. A contingent of NCC cadets drawn from the Army, Navy and Air Force presented a guard of honour to Mr. Shekhawat. A total of 1,792 cadets -- 1,198 boys and 594 girls -- drawn from 16 NCC directorates covering all the States and Union Territories of the country are participating in this Republic Day camp.

Recreation centres

NEW DELHI JAN. 8. The Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, today announced that her government planned to build recreation centres for senior citizens in all 70 Assembly constituencies across the Capital and plans for 31 of them were already in advanced stage of implementation.

Addressing the valedictory session of the 48th Bhagidari workshop with the Residents' Welfare Associations and citizen groups from East and North-East districts of Delhi, Ms. Dikshit said: "The responsibility of upkeep and maintenance of the recreation centres would be entrusted to local citizen groups."

Good show by Kendriya Bhandar

NEW DELHI JAN. 8 . The Chairman of Kendriya Bhandar, S.P. Tyagi, and Managing Director, Jagdeesh Bhatia, presented a cheque for Rs.20.45 lakhs to the Union Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions, Suresh Pachauri, here over the week-end towards payment of dividend by Kendriya Bhandar to the Union Government.

According to an official spokesman, Kendriya Bhandar has a paid-up share capital of Rs.81.31 lakhs out of which the Government's shareholding is Rs.68.18 lakhs. The Bhandar has declared its highest ever dividend of 30 per cent on its total paid-up capital to the shareholders for the financial year 2003-04.

"Kendriya Bhandar achieved record high sales amounting to Rs.292.66 crores during 2003-04," the spokesman added. Students contribute to tsunami fund

NEW DELHI JAN. 8. All the students and staff of Plato Public School contributed money for the relief and rehabilitation of tsunami victims here recently.

According to a release, the amount was forwarded to the Rotary International, which later forwarded the donations to the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund.

Annual prize day held

NEW DELHI JAN. 8. Salwan Public School celebrated its annual prize day at Rajinder Nagar here today. Toppers from different classes and sport stars who have excelled at the national level and talented students -- who have performed admirably in various co-curricular activities -- were the focus of attention.

The Salwan Public School Chairman, Harpal Singh, was the chief guest on the occasion. He conferred the 1st Pandit Girdhari Lal Salwan Memorial Award on Achal Bhagat, an ex-Salwanian who has achieved distinction as a renowned psychiatrist.

C.A. Menon cremated

NEW DELHI JAN. 8. The cremation of C.A. Menon -- a staunch Gandhian and follower of Vinoba Bhave -- who passed away on January 6, took place at Vijayghat here on Friday.

Vinoba Bhave had made the late Gandhian as the Sarvodaya Governor of Delhi during the Bhoodan Movement when he became the harbinger for popularising Naturopathy for the health of the entire society.

Born in Kerala in 1921, Menon's life was totally dedicated to serve the society especially the downtrodden through Gandhian activities.

Sasthapreethi celebrations

NEW DELHI JAN. 8. The Delhi Sasthapreethi Celebrations Committee has made all arrangements to celebrate the 45th annual Sasthapreethi this Sunday, January 9, at the Railway Board Staff Community Centre in Lakshmibai Nagar here. The proceedings will begin at 7 a.m.
