Search for man

TUTICORIN JAN. 8. The police are on the look out for one Jeyakumar (56) for allegedly torturing a woman residing at Eral near here on Friday.

Police said he had been charged under various sections of IPC as well as Section 4 of Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act.

Man murdered

TIRUNELVELI JAN. 8. A man was killed by two persons here on Friday.

C. Paninathan (33), one of the eight accused in the murder of P. Visuvasam alias MGR on July 29 last and hailing from Pottal under Palayamkottai police station limits, had gone to Nadhipuram under the Tirunelveli Town police station limits to hold `peace talks' with MGR's brother, P. Kumar (21).

When the `talks' failed, Kumar and his cousin, P. Arockiaraj (29) allegedly attacked him with sickles, in which Paninathan's left hand and head got severed.

The police arrested the duo immediately after the incident.

Bank staff disburse relief

TIRUNELVELI JAN. 8. The chairman of Pandyan Grama Bank, S. Manickam, distributed 11 truckloads of relief materials to tsunami victims of Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts.

An official statement said the employees of PGB collected relief materials, including rice, biscuits, medicine etc. in Tirunelveli, Tuticorin and Virudhunagar districts. They were taken to the tsunami-affected areas and distributed to nearly 17,000 victims.

Mr. Manickam also conducted a condolence meeting at Colachel.

Textbooks to be distributed

TIRUNELVELI JAN. 8. New textbooks and uniforms will be distributed on January 10 to the 6000-odd students, who have lost everything in the December 26 tragedy.

An official statement said 3,556 boys and 3,411 girls of 25 schools in the coastal hamlets of Tirunelveli district would be given new textbooks and uniforms by the head of the institutions concerned on January 10.

The Collector, Atul Anand, today handed over the books and dresses to the Chief Educational Officer, Karuppasamy.

`Stop felling trees'

Ramanathapuram Jan.8. The Collector, K. Sellamuthu, today, issued an order to stop cutting of trees in the Collectorate complex.

When reporters brought to the notice of the Collector the ongoing cutting of trees on the Collectorate complex, he immediately ordered the officials to stop it.

He said the existing trees would not be allowed to cut until further orders.

Mourning on January 12

CHENNAI JAN. 8 . The Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, today announced that the State would observe mourning on January 12 to pay homage to those who were killed in the December 26 tsunami strike. In a statement here, she said the decision was based on her announcement at Friday's all-party meeting that she accepted the suggestion to observe mourning on behalf of the people of the State.

The Cabinet would meet at 10.30 a.m. and adopt a condolence resolution after observing silence for two minutes. A two-minute silence would be observed during the same time in all schools, colleges, government offices and public sector undertakings. She appealed to the private sector units to pay homage to the deceased.

Tsunami contributions

CHENNAI JAN. 8 . A tsunami relief contribution, totalling Rs. 6 lakhs, collected by five Judges sitting in the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, was on Friday handed over to the Chief Justice, Markandey Katju, on behalf of the bars in Madurai and Chennai.

The amount, handed over by Justice P.D. Dinakaran, included Rs. 2.2 lakhs generated by auctioning a new year cake in Madurai, and a donation of Rs. 1 lakh each by the Additional Advocate-General, A.L. Somayaji, and the Habibulla Badsha Associates.

While Justice S. Ashok Kumar, sitting in the Madurai Bench, contributed materials worth Rs. 25,000, Mr. Justice Dinakaran and Justice N. Kannadasan contributed Rs. 10,000 to the calamity relief fund. The Chief Justice, after donating Rs. 10,000, wrote to all bar associations and judicial officers to contribute liberally to the fund. Justice D. Murugesan donated Rs. 5,000.

Collector assumes charge

NAGERCOIL JAN. 8. Sunil Paliwal has assumed charge as Collector of Kanyakumari. He succeeds Ramesh Chand Meena. He told presspersons that relief and rehabilitation works were going on a war-footing.

Guruvayur annual festival

CHENNAI JAN. 8 . The annual festival of Sree Krishna temple (Lord Sree Guruvayurappan) will begin on January 13 and conclude on March 2.

According to K. Anil Kumar, Administrator, Guruvayur Devaswom, children below five will not be admitted into the "Nalambalam" during this period as a precaution to ensure sanctity in all Tantric rites and poojas connected with the festival. But childfeeding and `thulabharam' will be allowed as usual.

Meet on concrete composites

CHENNAI JAN. 8. Research papers on important topics of science and engineering of concretes were presented at a three-day international conference, which concluded here today.

The meet, organised by the Structural Engineering Research Centre, was a sequel to the U.S. workshop on high performance, cement-based concrete composites, which it conducted on January 4 and 5.

Seismic safety and strengthening; self-compacting concrete; analytical and computational methodologies; and condition assessment/health monitoring/rehabilitation and behaviour of structural concrete and design were discussed at the conference. Around 250 delegates, including some from abroad and professionals from the construction and cement industries, participated, says a press release.

Re-elected chairman

CHENNAI JAN. 8. A. Sakthivel has been re-elected chairman of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations-Southern Region for another two years. He is also the chairman of the Apparel Export Promotion Council and president of the Tirupur Exporters Association and the Indian Chamber of Commerce, Coimbatore.

Development loan

CHENNAI JAN. 8 . The State Government has notified the issue of a ten-year development loan with an interest of 7. 02 per cent. The stock will be issued at par (Rs.100) for a minimum of Rs.10, 000, and in multiples thereof.

The interest will be paid half-yearly and the tenure will begin on January 13. The proceeds will be used for works in irrigation and industrial development and for re-lending to local bodies and farmers.

The Tamil Nadu State Development Loan, 2015, will be sold through the Reserve Bank of India, Chennai and Mumbai, from January 11. The loan will be repaid at par on January 13, 2015 at the public debt office of the RBI.

Reappointed Vice-Chancellor

Postponed

TIRUPUR JAN. 8 . The inauguration of the Netaji Apparel Park, scheduled for tomorrow, has been postponed to January 10, according to A. Sakthivel, chairman and managing director.

The Union Finance Minister, P. Chidambaram, and the Textiles Minister, Shankersinh Vaghela, will participate in the function. The postponement was due to the all-party meeting scheduled for January 9 in New Delhi to discuss tsunami relief, sources said.

Bar gesture to tsunami victims

PUDUKOTTAI JAN.8 . The Pudukottai Bar Association has donated Rs.20,050 to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund for tsunami-affected victims.

A demand draft for the amount was handed over to the Principal District and Sessions Judge, R. Ravindran, by members of the association, led by its president, K. Shanmugam, and its secretary, S. Chandrasekaran, recently, said a release.

Plea for BSNL tower

PERAMBALUR JAN.8. The Telephone Users Association has urged Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited authorities to set up an exclusive tower at V. Kalathur for the benefit of mobile phone-users in the area.

In a memorandum to the Chief General Manager, BSNL, Chennai, the secretary, A. Shahjahan, said there were over 500 mobile phone-users at V. Kalathur and neighbouring areas, including Thaikkal, Ayanperaiyur, Indira Nagar, Pimbalur, Maravanatham, Pasumbalur, Agaram, Tiruvaalandurai, N. Puthur, Milleth Nagar and Vannarampoondi.

Power cut

PUDUKOTTAI JAN.8. There will be no power supply in the following areas from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, due to maintenance work at the Pudukottai Town I Feeder, according to a Tamil Nadu Electricity Board press release issued here today:

Tirugokarnam, Tilagar Thidal, Machuvadi, North Main street, Kamarajapuram, Ganesh Nagar, Bose Nagar, Ayyanarpuram, Gandhi Nagar, Usilangulam, Ashok Nagar, Sathiyamoorthy Nagar and Nizam Colony.

There will be no power supply at Narthamalai, Vadaseripatty, Andakulam and Pudukottai town (partly) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. the same day.
