Suggestions to aid workers

CHENNAI, JAN. 8. Lakshmi Ravikanth psychologist, The Banyan, had the following pointers for aid workers counselling the affected, based on her work across the State:

* Respect the affected. Call them by their first name

* Listen and talk to them in their language

* Do not give false reassurances

* Allow them to relive and tell their story

* Empathise

* Make promises you can keep

* Convey that their reactions are normal to an abnormal situation

* Do not ignore any hint of suicide

* See the person at least three times for a minimum of 45 minutes each

* If normalcy is not restored within six to eight weeks then refer to doctors
