PONDICHERRY, JAN. 8. The Maharashtra Chief Minister, Vilasrao Deshmukh, has said that his government has decided to take up a project to build houses in the tsunami-hit villages in the Pondicherry and Karaikal regions. Talking to newsmen at Ganapathychettykulam near Pondicherry during his visit to the village today he said that a team of officers of his government had already been touring the two regions for an assessment of the havoc. The team would make the report available to him shortly and based on it and also on the requirements the Pondicherry Administration his government would decide the help and assistance `in all respects` to the Union Territory. The help would also include technical assistance in designing and construction of houses. He said Maharashtra had had experience in rehabilitation aspect during natural disasters as could be evidenced by the work done in his own district of Latur in Maharashtra during earthquake. He said the Maharashtra Government had already adopted two villages in cyclone ravaged Orissa some years ago. Hence his government would render all help to Pondicherry. Mr.Deshmukh said that he had already appealed to the people in Maharashtra to contribute to the Relief Fund. At the party level, the president of the Mumbai Congress Committee, Gurudas Kamat, MP, would arrange for fishnets for Pondicherry and Karaikal regions. Mr Kamat also accompanied the Chief Minister. He said he had seen earlier in the day the extent of havoc in Karaikal by visiting some villages there. He said that relief works by Pondicherry administration were going on excellently. The Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, and the Pondicherry PCC president, V. Narayanasamy, MP, who accompanied Mr.Deshmukh from Karaikal to Pondicherry in the helicopter took him round Ganapathychettykulam and explained to him the extent of havoc the hamlet and other villages had suffered in the tsunami. One of the residents told Mr.Deshmukh that 16 persons were killed in the village on the fateful day.
