MYSORE, JAN. 8. A strong motion accelerograph, which monitors ground behaviour during earthquakes, will soon be installed at JSS Ashram, situated at the foot of Chamundi Hills near Mysore. According to a press release from Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE), the JSS Ashram has been identified as one of the sites for recording ground motion under a joint project taken up by the SJCE, Mysore, and Department of Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, to assess ground behaviour during earthquake. The strong motion accelerograph has an inbuilt GPS that can provide the exact location with time and an accelerograph that can record ground acceleration above a pre-set level. The joint project of SJCE and IISc, which is worth Rs. 65 lakh, has been sanctioned by Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, New Delhi. The equipment was handed over by B.R. Srinivasa Murthy and T.G. Sitharam of the IISc to the SJCE Principal, B.G. Sangameshwar, and Professor and Head of Civil Engineering, Syed Shakeeb Ur Rahman. "It will be installed soon at JSS Ashram. Mysoreans can now boast of a facility that can monitor shaking of earth," Prof. Sangameshwar said. The SJCE pointed out that the recent tsunami strike, triggered by an undersea earthquake off the Indonesian island of Sumatra, and the earthquake in Gujarat's Bhuj during 2001, have made studies in earthquake engineering important. Hence, the two institutions have come together to establish strong motion accelerographs to assess ground behaviour during earthquake, he added.
