MYSORE, JAN. 8. A joint action committee comprising Members of Parliament and Legislative Assembly from Mysore, Kannur, Kozhikode and Wynad districts and senior leaders from all political parties has been formed to seek the widening of Mysore-Manandawadi Highway that could help development of hinterland in Karnataka and Kerala. The first meeting that was held at Beechanahalli, the dam site for Kabini Dam, near here today decided to meet the officials concerned in the Union Ministry for Environment and Ecology seeking environmental clearance for widening of the 30-km stretch between Honnammanakatte and Bavali in H.D. Kote taluk. It was also decided that a delegation would visit New Delhi before the Budget session to press for its demands. Addressing the gathering, the former Minister M. Shivanna said that the project to develop the 91-km stretch between Mysore and Manandawadi has been sponsored by World Bank and that the Karnataka State Highway Improvement Project will be executing it. While the World Bank has released Rs. 35 crores for the entire project, only Rs. 25 crores was being used since clearance has been given to only 61 km. Clearance to the entire stretch will ensure development of H.D. Kote taluk as well as Wynad district that have remained backward for a long time, he added. The joint action committee, to be headed by the Mysore MP, C.H. Vijayashankar, will strive to secure the clearance by interacting with the ministries concerned, he said. The Kannur MP, A.P. Abdullah Kutti, said that the improvement of the road will help in strengthening the age-old ties between the two States. Besides, the improvement of road will boost agriculture and industry. The Kozhikode MP, M.P. Veerendra Kumar, who was unable to attend the meeting sent a letter supporting the objectives of the joint action committee, and had assured to join the delegation to meet the officials. Mr. Abduallah Kutti and Mr. Veerendra Kumar will be the Vice-chairman of the joint action committee. The Kannur MP, A.P. Abdullah Kutti, the Kerala Legislative Assembly Member from North Wynad, Radha Raghunath, Wynad Zilla Panchayat President, K.K. Ahmed Haji, Manandawadi Taluk Panchayat President, Asia Moidu, and a host of zilla panchayat and taluk panchayat members attended today's meeting.
