Temporary sheds for tsunami-hit families

NAGAPATTINAM, JAN. 8. Temporary sheds are being constructed in the tsunami-battered coastal villages in the district and the affected families residing at relief centres will be shifted to the sheds in their respective areas by Pongal, said Shantha Sheela Nair, Secretary, Rural Development and Local Administration.

Addressing a joint press conference here this evening along with Vivek Harinarain, Secretary, Information Technology and M. Veera Shanmugha Moni, Collector, she said the army personnel were doing a tremendous job of clearing debris, removing and repairing boats and laying approach roads along with civilian workers.

Mr.Vivek Harinarain said that 222 children including 141 girls lost their parents and became orphans. Till this evening Rs.40.52 crores had been disbursed towards compensation and packages to the affected families in the district.

Mr.Veera Shanmugha Moni said that with the recovery of nine more bodies in the last 24 hours till this afternoon, the toll in the tsunami tragedy rose to 6,044 (1,879 men, 2,401 women, 883 boys and 881 girls) in the district.

He said that the fishermen were being encouraged to go for fishing. K. P. Anbazhagan, Minister for Information, along with O. S. Manian, AIADMK leader, ventured into the sea at Kodiakarai with some fishermen to instil confidence among fishermen and returned to the shore by fish caught was auctioned for Rs.1,300.
