Making phone calls at others' expense

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, JAN. 8. One person has been arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi police for allegedly making international calls from somebody else's number by "duplicating" it with the help of software. These "duplicated" connections were used to make calls to Gulf countries.

According to the police, cellular phone operators had complained about some people running up huge bills in making calls to the Gulf countries. Following investigations, the police came to know that one person was involved in the racket.

Acting on a tip-off, the police arrested Mohammad Yaseen from outside Apollo Hospital when he was going in his Santro car on January 5. The police recovered 20 mobile phones of Reliance Infocom, a laptop, one SIM card scanner and writer. Further searches at his Mehrauli residence led to the recovery of three more mobile phones and seven CDs of a particular software.

During interrogation, Yaseen told the police that he had managed to procure software, which could be used to read the data stored in a SIM card.

This data could then be reloaded on another SIM card with the help of the software "Patagonia". Thus, he was able to prepare "clones" of mobile phones. These phones were then given to customers for making international calls to Gulf countries.

Yaseen further told the police that he was about to purchase a software, which became recently available in the illegal market in Mumbai, with the help of which any prepaid cellular phone card could be recharged without the customer actually paying for it.
