Many roads to reach tsunami victims

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, JAN. 8. With the death toll mounting with each passing day, various organisations and concerned citizens from across the Capital are lending a helping hand for the tsunami victims.

Gearing up for action to assist the tsunami victims, a "Kaafila-e-Taj Vintage and Classic Automobile Drive'' was flagged off at Le Meridian Hotel here today. Fourteen Vintage and Classic Cars and 15 two wheelers participated in the event organised by Heritage Motoring Club of India (HMCI) in association with Le Meridian. Coinciding with the commemoration of 350 years of Taj Mahal, the event was also co-hosted by Uttar Pradesh Tourism as part of the ongoing celebrations. Present on the occasion were the president of HMCI, Tutu Dhawan, and general secretary, Bijendra Gupta.

With all the assistance pouring in, here is some designer help too. On sale at the CTC Plaza here in Kilokri will be the costumes worn by actors of Vashu Bhagnani's latest thriller "Vaada'' from January 13 to 15. Made by renowned designers like Rocky S, Shahid Amin and Kamal, the proceeds from the sale will go to the victims of the calamity. A few days ago, ten costumes were auctioned in the Capital.

"Usually costumes go waste after the movie is made. By selling these dresses, we will be making a small contribution in comparison to the massive impact this tragedy has caused to millions. We had Rs. 1.95 lakhs at the auction in Noida earlier and have decided to donate the entire collection of Vaada's first show in Delhi also,'' said Mr. Bhagnani.

A delegation led by the Delhi Pradesh Bharatiya Janata Party, Harsh Vardhan, presented a cheque for Rs. 15 lakhs for the `BJP Calamity Relief Fund' to the party president, L.K. Advani, on Friday. The delegation included the Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, Jagdish Mukhi, and the Leader of the Opposition in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Subhash Arya.

Apart from the contribution, the delegation also raised the issue of the transportation of material to the tsunami victims. According to them, due to the "obstinacy of the Railway Ministry the relief material could not be made available to the tsunami afflicted people because Railway has not made arrangements for its transportation''.
