By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JAN. 7. Fishing craft estimated to cost more than Rs. 100 crores had been destroyed by tsunami in Kerala.

According to the memorandum submitted by the State to the Centre, 10,882 fishing craft of different types have been destroyed or damaged by the killer waves. This constituted nearly 18 per cent of the fishing craft that were operating in the State. The total loss is assessed to be about Rs. 66 crores.

The mechanised boats, on an average, carry 300 to 400 kg of fishing net (webbing). Outboard engine-fitted crafts carry 150 kg to 250 kg and inboard engine-fitted boats carry 700 to 1,000 kg of webbing. Traditional craft and catamarans operate with 50 kg of net. Besides the craft, some sheds used to store the nets had been washed away. Thus the total quantity of fishing nets lost or destroyed is 915 metric tonnes, and the loss works out to be of Rs. 36.60 lakhs.
