ALAPPUZHA, JAN. 8. A meeting of the farmers of Kuttanad organised by the Kuttanad Vikasana Samithi at Mampuzhakkari has demanded the construction of a spillway-cum-regulator across the Kayamkulam lake at Choolatheruvu or Vettathukadavu in Arattupuzha panchayat in the district to permanently solve the problem of intrusion of saline water into Kuttanad. It was noted at the meeting that saline water was entering Kuttanad through the Kayamkulam lake. The construction of a regulator would help prevent the entry of saline water into the lake and in turn into Kuttanad, it was observed. It was decided that 2005 would be observed as Kuttanad Paddy Development Year. It was demanded that the Government should declare the floor price of paddy for the year 2005 as Rs.850. It was pointed out that various insurance companies were not giving the arrears of the insurance amount due to the farmers of Kuttanad as the State Government had not paid the premium to the companies. The State Government was urged to pay the premium immediately to enable the farmers to get the benefits.
Include farmers in committees
It was demanded at the meeting that the representatives of farmers be included in various committees being formed by the State Government on paddy cultivation. It was decided to form self-help groups of farmers of Kuttanad under the Kuttanad Vikasana Samithi and to market the traditionally hand-processed rice of Kuttanad under the brand name Kuttanadan Kuthari.
