Domestic animals provided shelter

By Our Staff Reporter

KOLLAM, JAN. 8. More than 90 domestic animals left behind by their owners at Alapad panchayat following the tsunami onslaught found solace at relief camps opened in the affected area by the Animal Husbandry Department and the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

These animals were provided fodder and cattle feed brought in the SPCA wagon. Timely medical attention was also provided to these animals. A round-the-clock emergency cell, based at the Kulasekharapuram Government Veterinary Hospital, also functioned for the care of the animals in the tsunami-hit areas.

A preliminary report prepared by the Animal Husbandry Department shows that 276 cattle and more than 6,000 poultry birds perished in the tsunami onslaught. It has been estimated that more than 200 cowsheds were damaged and five tons of cattle feed destroyed.

A Rs.5.5-crore scheme for the revival of the dairy and poultry sectors in the area has been prepared by the department and submitted to the State Government.
