GULBARGA, JAN. 8. The Minister for Water Resources, Mallikarjun Kharge, on Saturday dismissed the allegations levelled by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) against the coalition Government that development works had come to a halt. Reacting sharply to the allegations made by the leader of Opposition, Jagadish Shettar, Mr. Kharge told The Hindu that despite facing a few problems in the initial stages and delay in the Ministry expansion, the coalition Government had not failed to deliver the goods to the people.
Affected
He pointed out that none of the development works, including road works and irrigation projects, had been affected after the Government came to power. The welfare programmes, including the mid-day meal scheme and housing programmes for the poor in urban and rural areas, were proceeding as planned. Mr. Kharge said that drought relief works in the affected taluks had been taken up and the Government had provided required funds to the respective Deputy Commissioners to ensure that the people did not suffer owing to want of employment.
Priority
Top priority has been accorded to solving the drinking water shortage in rural and urban areas in the drought-hit regions. He dubbed the contention of the BJP leader that the Government was not functioning at all levels as "fertile imagination" and said that the financial situation of the State was sound. He said that resource mobilisation in the key departments, such as Excise and Commercial taxes, was the highest in recent years. The Minister said that the BJP, which does not have any specific charge against the coalition Government, was making these "wild allegations" out of frustration. He said that instead of making unfounded charges against the coalition partners, the Opposition party should extend constructive cooperation to the Government.
