Johansson to meet Dent

ADELAIDE, JAN. 8. Second-seeded Joachim Johansson of Sweden and American Taylor Dent will contest the final of the Australian men's hardcourt tennis championships following straight-set semifinal wins on Saturday.

Johansson beat Olivier Rochus of Belgium 6-1, 7-6(5) at Memorial Drive while the fifth-seeded Dent, son of former Australian Davis Cup player Phil Dent, defeated Argentina's Juan Ignacio Chela 6-1, 6-1.

Srebotnik triumphs

Slovakia's Katarina Srebotnik beat doubles partner Shinbou Asagoe of Japan 5-7, 7-5, 6-4 to win the ASB Women's Classic final at Auckland.

The unseeded Srebotnik fought back from a set and 0-4 down to beat the fourth-seeded Asagoe in two hours and 20 minutes for her third WTA title.

Federer in final

Roger Federer continued his impressive preparations for the defence of his Australian Open title the week after next by reaching the final of the one-million-dollar Qatar Open without dropping his serve.

The triple Grand Slam titleholder's delivery has now survived four matches and eight sets, following his 6-3, 6-4 victory over Nikolay Davydenko, the eight-seeded Russian.

The results: At Adelaide (Australian men's hardcourt championships): Semifinals: Joachim Johansson bt Olivier Rochus of Belgium 6-1, 7-6(5); Taylor Dent bt Juan Ignacio Chela 6-1, 6-1.

At Gold Coast (Australian women's hardcourt championships): Final: Patty Schnyder bt Samantha Stosur 1-6, 6-3, 7-5.

At Auckland (ASB Women's Classic): Final: Katarina Srebotnik bt Shinbou Asagoe 5-7, 7-5, 6-4.

At Doha (the Qatar Open): Final: Roger Federer bt. Ivan Ljubicic (Cro) 6-3, 6-1.

Semifinals: Ivan Ljubicic bt Albert Costa 6-3, 7-6(4); Roger Federer bt Nikolay Davydenko 6-3, 6-4.
