Surendra equals National record

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, JAN. 8. Surendra Singh Rathod equalled the National record of 595 in the men's 50 metre rifle prone competition in the Sardar Sajjan Singh Sethi memorial masters shooting championships at the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) range on the University of Hyderabad campus here on Saturday.

Rathod equalled the mark held by Army Marksmanship University (AMU) teammate A.P. Subbiah on a day that his squad swept the first three places.

His superiority went unchallenged in the first detail. When he glanced at his personal scoring sheet at the end of the second, he had no doubt that he would emerge on top.

The Ahmedabad native attributed his victory to the coaching from his former compatriots Subedar Charan Singh and Subedar Bharath Singh.

This was the 23-year-old Havaldar's best score in a five-year shooting career. Right through Saturday's competition he remained tension-free, amply illustrated by his being the quickest to complete the second detail.

On the distaff side, Deepali Deshpande scored four points less than her Asansol performance but nonetheless claimed gold.

Tied with 587 each, Kuheli Gangulee was adjudged second over Raj Kumari on account of the former's superior sixth series score of 99 against the latter's 98.

The results:

Men: 50 m rifle prone: 1. Surendra Singh Rathod 595 (AMU); 2. Sushil Ghaley 589 (AMU); 3. Imran Hassan Khan 588 (AMU).

Team: 1. Army (Ghaley, Rathod, Babu Ram 583) 1767; 2. Navy (Satguru Dass 587, Sanjeev Rajput 586, Bishnu Nag 584) 1757; 3. BSF (M.T. Sutar 584, M. Shankar 583, Shamsher Singh 581) 1748.

Women: 50 m rifle prone: 1. Deepali Deshpande 591 (RSPB); 2. Kuheli Gangulee 587 (CISF); 3. Raj Kumari 587 (AMU).
