By Our Staff Reporter

KOZHIKODE, JAN. 8. In a significant breakthrough, the Crime Squad attached to the Kozhikode City Police today nabbed a car mechanic hailing from Coimbatore in connection with the attack on the manager of Muthoot Financial Enterprises on the Cherotty Road here on Tuesday.

The City Police Commissioner, H. Venkatesh and the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Chakkeri Aboobaker, told presspersons that Ranjeev Jose (33) was arrested from his rented house at Nellikode, near here. The accused had confessed to the crime that he attacked the manager, Jayarajan Nair, with a hammer on his head at around 8.15 a.m. The police officers said that the motive behind the attack was robbery. Ranjeev Jose had a huge liability of Rs. 18 lakhs. Besides running a car workshop, he was running a visa business. He had pledged gold ornaments of his friends and relatives with the finance company.

The accused had planned to rob the finance company after getting inspiration from the programme, `New Detectives,' in the Discovery channel on how to commit a crime without leaving any clues. However, he was not sure whether Mr. Jayarajan had the keys of the lockers. On Wednesday, Ranjeev Jose had come to the firm with Mr. Jayarajan on a motorbike on the pretext to test the gold ornaments at the finance company. The victim was hit on the head after he had opened the two shutters of the finance company. He received around 10 hits on the head with the hammer. But the accused could not open the lockers since Mr. Jayarajan was not having their master key with him. It was with the assistant manager of the firm. The Town Police had registered a case in connection with the incident.
