Mangalore
By Our Staff Correspondent
MANGALORE, JAN. 8. The people of Mangalore are concerned over the high incidence of crime in the city. This came to the fore at a meeting convened here today to discuss public safety. Social workers, human rights activists and others, who met at Yenepoya, said they are apprehensive about the safety of the people in the city. Morning walkers, working women and old people are becoming easy victims to criminals. The crime graph is soaring, they said. Human rights activist P.B. D'Sa noted that even the police have been attacked. But political intervention has prevented them from taking action. Some police officers have been forced to opt for transfer, he said and called for a halt to political intervention in the day-to-day affairs of the police. He urged the Government to form a committee to look into this problem. Vimla Lobo, convener of the group, told The Hindu that there has been an increase in the number of incidents of attacks on the elderly and women. People should come together and form a group, which should try to prevent crime by maintaining vigilance and coordinating with the police, she said. Mangalore is a growing city and the people are feeling the absence of a good security system, she added. Citing the murder of Vineeta Ramachandran on December 12, 2004, she said such incidents are being reported in the press regularly. Legal activists Carol Pais, Reyanna Mukesh and Rathna Pinto urged the people to form a group to coordinate with the police to bring down the crime rate. It was decided to convene meetings in different wards of the Mangalore City Corporation to create awareness among the people about maintaining vigilance in their localities.
