Visakhapatnam
By Our Staff Reporter
VISAKHAPATNAM, JAN. 8. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) unit of the Visakhapatnam Port Trust on Saturday unearthed a POL pilferage racket. The CISF grew suspicious after seizing a van, 94 empty jerry cans and six PVC pipes from the HPCL railway sliding yard a couple of days ago. During the enquiry, they came to know that an organised gang comprising 10 to 12 persons was involved in stealing POL and selling it to others in a systematic manner.
Search operation
According to sources, the gang had caused a loss to the tune of crores of rupees during the past several months by specialising in pilferage from railway tankers. During its search operation along the side of the HPCL canal and railway holding line at Malkapuram, the CISF contingent noticed three cemented ponds, 15 empty drums of 20 litre capacity and a funnel for illegal pilferage. ``It appears that the organised gangs do indulge in pilferage for a considerable time,'' the CISF Assistant Commandant, B.D. Sharma, said. The gang used to indulge in theft of POL from the tankers by tampering the oil tankers. The POL so collected used to be transported for illegal operation after refining the same. The seized material was handed over to the Malkapuram Police for further investigation.
