Weather

Gannavaram airport recorded a maximum temperature of 31 degree Celsius and a minimum of 18.7 degree Celsius on Saturday. Humidity which was 96 per cent in the morning dropped to 66 per cent in the evening.

Commodity prices

The following are the prices (in rupees per kg) of the essential commodities in the local wholesale markets on Saturday, according to the Vijayawada Chamber of Commerce and Industry: groundnut oil - 51, palmolein oil - 39.25, sunflower oil - 51, tamarind (flower variety) - 30 to 40, tamarind (karipuli variety) - 45 to 57, chillies (AC) - 20 to 27, chillies (non-AC) - 12 to14, rice (2716) - 12, rice (superfine) - 12.50, rice (samba masoori) - 13 to 14, rice (sona masoori) - 15 to 16, black gram - 18.35 to 21.70, red gram - 22 to 26.

Milk for tsunami-hit

The Krishna District Milk Producers' Mutually Aided Cooperative Union Ltd will supply 28,000 litres of Vijayawada UHT milk in tetra brick packs in the tsunami-hit areas of Tamil Nadu and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Tetra Pac India has donated Rs. 6.39 lakhs for the purpose.

Funds sought

The Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan regional office has decided to submit proposals to the Union Government seeking sanction of funds for providing relief and rehabilitation of tsunami affected areas like Kakinada, Eluru, Ongole, Krishna and Nellore, falling under its jurisdiction. The Sangathan has already distributed 15 quintals of rice, half a truck load of quality clothes, and other provision.

Tributes paid

The Vijayawada city committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) paid rich tributes to the late Communist leader, D.V. Subba Rao, on the occasion of his 39th death anniversary on Saturday.

The CPI(M) district secretary, V. Uma Maheswara Rao, and the CPI(M) city secretary, Ch. Babu Rao, spoke.
