BMP may provide sites for urban poor

By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE, JAN. 8. The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike may take up the task of providing social security to the urban poor by providing house sites. At the same time it does want them to sell away the sites if they are located close to highways and are offered high prices.

The Mayor, R. Narayanaswamy, announced this on Saturday after laying the foundation stone for the Rs. 10-lakh Ambedkar Bhavan, a multipurpose centre, and an anganawadi centre, and distributing `Anubhavadharara khata certificates' to people in Peenya, Fourth Extension, coming under Ward 1. Every citizen will get the opportunity to live in dignity if he gets a piece of land and a roof over his head, the Mayor said. Ten out of the 248 eligible beneficiaries were given khata certificates.

M.R. Seetharam, MLA for Malleswaram, who was the chief guest, said the newly added ward has been provided all civic amenities. The Uttarahalli MLA, R. Ashok, who presided over the function, asked the people not to sell their allotted sites. Several other programmes are to be taken up for the area, including setting aside land for playgrounds and a modern crematorium.

The ruling party leader in the BMP, B.T. Srinivasamurthy, and the BJP leader, B.M. Mangala, were among those present.
