Temperature

TIRUCHI, JAN. 8. The city recorded a maximum temperature of 29.8 degree Celsius and a minimum of 20.6 degree Celsius.

Woman set ablaze

In a case of dowry harassment, a 22-year old woman was allegedly set ablaze by her in-laws at Bheema Nagar here today. Seetha, who sustained burns, was admitted to Government Hospital and later taken to a private hospital.

The police arrested four persons including Seetha's husband Anand (25) and her mother-in-law Lakshmi. Seetha's in-laws had been reportedly demanding jewels and cash as dowry from her for some time.

Only two months ago, Seetha got married to Anand.

Another woman, Illanchiyam, who has also been cited as an accused in the case is absconding. The Cantonment All Woman Police Station has registered a case.

One held with pirated CDs

The police have arrested Rajkumar (27) of Srirangam for possessing pirated compact discs of Tamil and English films.

The police seized 11 CDs. The Cantonment police have registered a case.

Procession

Cadres of the Communist Party of India took out a rally for the party's 18th district conference held at Manapparai in the district on Friday. The party MP, M. Appadurai, flagged off the rally at Kothamettupatti Nehru statue and ended near Periyar statue.

The party's national committee member, A.M. Gopu, the district secretary M. Selvaraj, and the AITUC district secretary, N. Balakrishnan, participated.

Ear and eye screening camp

In connection with the Road Safety Week celebrations, the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation organised an ear and eye screening camp for bus crew here on Friday.

A doctors' team of A.G. Eye Hospital screened over 500 drivers and conductors.

Cleaning work

In view of the Pongal festival, the Corporation Commissioner Harmander Singh has directed the civic body employees to carry out a coordinated special cleaning work in areas under the corporation limits from January 8 to 13.

A Corporation release said the Commissioner had directed the civic body staff to remove garbage from roads and other residential colonies.

Donation

Staff and trainees of Zonal Railway Training Institute of Southern Railway here donated Rs.20,500 for the Chief Minister's Relief Fund for tsunami victims.

The Principal, M. V. Murali, handed over the cheque to the Collector, V. Pandian, recently.

The representatives of the Mannarpuram Residents Welfare Association, led by its president, M. Aravandi, handed over a cheque of Rs.13,622 to the Collector.

Members of the Tiruchi District Pensioners' Association have decided to contribute one day's pension towards the CM's Relief Fund.

A decision was taken at a meeting of the association held here yesterday with G. Palaniandi, its president in the chair.

Mettur level

The level at the Mettur reservoir stood at 76.22 feet today. The inflow was 363 cusecs, and the discharge 11,455 cusecs.
