Pattom flyover: feasibility study conducted

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JAN. 8. The Public Works Department (PWD) has completed the feasibility study for the construction of a flyover at Pattom Junction. The proposal, however, will not be included in the ongoing city roads improvement scheme.

It would be taken up as a separate project, a senior official said.

The flyover would be designed in such a way as to ease traffic congestion at Pattom, where there is the highest concentration of vehicular traffic. The Kesavadasapuram- Plamoodu road through Pattom Junction is one of the most congested routes in the city. Four schools, including Arya Central School, Kendriya Vidyalaya, Government Model Girls High School and St. Mary's School, are located along this road, which add to traffic snarls.

PWD officials said the flyover would begin from the road in front of the Planning Board building and provide an elevated route for vehicles up to Plamoodu Junction where it would descend to the road level.

The flyover will free up a key junction on the second intermediate ring road linking Kuravankonam, Kowdiar, Golf Links, Sasthamanagalam, Kochar Road, Jagathy, Killipalam, Chalai Bypass, Puthen Street, Eenchakal, NH Bypass, Anayara, Poonthi Road, Kumarapuram, Pottakuzhy and Pattom.

Network concept

According to engineers associated with the City Roads Improvement Scheme, the entire project employs the network concept to decongest the crowded areas and provide a long-range solution for the horizontal development of the entire capital region.

The project seeks to widen the existing road network by creating ring and radial roads covering the entire city and some suburban areas.

While the inner ring road covers Palayam (underpass), Bakery Junction (flyover), Panavila, Thampanoor, Overbridge, Uppidamoodu, Vanchiyoor, Pattoor and the General Hospital Junction, the first intermediate ring road will facilitate uninterrupted traffic through LMS Junction, Vellayambalam, Vazhuthacaud, Thycaud, Choorakattupalayam, Power House Road, Thakarapparambu (flyover), Kavaradi Road, Pettah and Kannamoola to the Law College Junction.

Kochar Road has been identified as a major eastern tangent for the second Intermediate ring road.

The scheme also envisages an outer ring road linking Kesavadasapuram through Paruthipara, Ambalamukku, Peroorkada, Mannamoola, Vattiyoorkavu, Palace Junction, Kaimanam, Thiruvallam, NH Bypass, Anayara and Prasanth Nagar to Ulloor.

Land bank

The project adviser to the City Roads Improvement Scheme, N.S. Srinivasan, said the long-range solution for horizontal development of the capital would depend on a mid orbital ring road for the region covering Mangalapuram, Pothencode, Mannanthala, Vazhayila, Vattiyoorkavu, Peyad, Balaramapuram, Venganoor and Vizhinjam.

He said this network should be designed to integrate a land bank to accommodate industrial units, hospitals, educational institutions and commercial units.

Radial corridors should be developed to connect with the mid orbital ring road, he pointed out.

This will be supplemented by a regional outer ring road connecting Attingal, Nedumangad and Parassala.
