KOCHI, JAN. 8. The State coordination committee of the Bamboo Corporation Workers' Union (CITU) has demanded withdrawal of the Government decision to allow private parties to cut bamboos from forests. S. Sarma, convener of the committee, said here today that the Government decision to treat bamboo as a non-forest produce was aimed at facilitating private participation in the bamboo sector. The decision would only help forest mafias to further exploit the reserved forest. He said that hitherto only the Kerala State Bamboo Corporation had been allowed to cut and remove bamboo from forests. The new decision would also affect the employees and others dependent on the corporation. As many as one lakh workers were employed in the bamboo sector in the districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram and Palakkad. It was to end the exploitation of the private parties that the corporation had been set up. The employees of the corporation were now going through a bad patch because of the reduction in the procurement of canes. It was the financial crunch that had forced the corporation to cut down the bamboo procurement, he said. Mr. Sarma said the Government had not consulted the unions before taking a decision to privatise the bamboo sector. The coordination committee had decided to intensify its agitation against the Government decision. As part of the agitation, a convention would be organised in all the districts and a march would be taken out on February 7.
