KOCHI, JAN. 8. The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) will contribute 5,000 mandays for rebuilding houses damaged by the seismic waves that lashed the State on December 26. In a press release issued here today, the DYFI district secretary, John Fernandes, said that it has promised the district administration to do whatever possible to help in the relief effort. Over 200 houses have been damaged in Ernakulam district alone. DYFI activists will be recruited from 2,200 units in the district for the rebuilding effort. At present, many of the activists are engaged in constructing temporary shelters and toilets for those who lost their homes in the disaster. The houses will be rebuilt as directed by the district administration. Those people who are willing to help the organisation in the effort must contact local office-bearers of the DYFI. Food and accommodation requirements of the volunteers will be taken care of, he said.
Bar council's gesture
The Kerala Bar Council has donated the first instalment of Rs.1 lakh to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. The cheque for the amount was handed over to the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, today.
Survey sought
The Coconut Development Board Employees' Association has demanded a survey to assess the damage caused to coconut plantations and farmers in places affected by the tsunami like the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the coastal States of the country. The annual meeting of the Association also demanded that a programme be drawn up to regenerate coconut plantations. The Association also contributed Rs.5,001 towards the relief fund for tsunami victims.
