Physicist cautions against `operators' among scientists

By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI, JAN. 8. Noted physicist E.C.G. Sudarshan has cautioned scientists against `operators' among the scientific community who steal ideas and take the credit for themselves.

Giving a lecture at the Maharajah's College here today to mark the World Year of Physics, he said the Einstein's era was a miraculous period and miracles in science would continue to occur in future too.

Researchers have to be careful not to disclose the details until it is published. There are many instances of stealing ideas in the research arena, he said. Einstein was clever enough to ensure credit for his work. In fact, he had done several additional research on some basic ideas propounded by a few others. The ultimate credit went to Einstein.

In modern times, there are many nice people who know about the stealing in research but they keep mum. This is a detestable trend, according to Mr. Sudarshan, Professor at the University of Texas, USA, and a Padmabhushan awardee.

Einstein was helped in his research in connection with Theory of Relativity by his Armenian wife who was more brilliant than him during the academic days, Mr. Sudarshan said. Her contributions had not been duly acknowledged. The Indian scientist Satyendranath, after having found out a theory, wrote about it to Einstein who, in turn, expanded it to derive much credit for himself.
