Ernakulam overall champions

KOCHI, JAN. 8. The day belonged to students of Ernakulam as they were crowned the overall champions after ending up in a tie at the top spot of the Ernakulam Revenue District High School Youth Festival.

District wise, Ernakulam topped the list in Upper Primary Balakalolsavom with 95 points also. Mattanchery closely followed Ernakulam with 94 points and Aluva with 90 points.

In the Upper Primary Sanskrit Festival, North Paravoor emerged first with 119 points, Angamali shared the second position with Aluva with a total of 112 points each and Perumbavoor in third position with 107 points. In the Upper Primary Arabic Youth Festival, Vypeen and Thripunithura were at the top with 53 points each and Aluva (52 points) and Kothamangalam (47 points) were at second and third positions respectively.

Controversy

The five-day festival ended with a little bit of controversy as teachers accompanying students who participated in the final competition, ganamela, challenged the judgement. Some of the teachers complained that the judgment sheet was tampered with, after the judges wrote their decision. The argument went on even while the valedictory session began with chief guests present on the dais.

The situation got tense with one of the judges was stopped from leaving the venue. The police had to intervene to release him. Later, students of the St. Ann's High School, Eloor and the GGHS, Ernakulam presented a written complaint to V.D. Satheesan, MLA, who was on the dais during the valedictory session.

According to the organising committee, of the 30 appeals that came up during the festival, only 10 were regarding the results of competitions.
