DINDIGUL, JAN. 9. The Commissioner for Agriculture, Jagmohan Singh Raju, announced that the National Agriculture Cooperative Marketing Federation Limited in association with the Department of Agriculture has launched a pilot project, first of its kind in the State, ensuring minimum guaranteed price to maize growers in Dindigul and Theni districts. Talking to mediapersons, after launching the project here this evening, he said that under this scheme, the federation, to begin with, had planned to procure 5,000 tonnes of maize each in Dindigul and Theni districts at Rs. 525 a quintal. Money would be settled within three days from the date of procurement. The objective of the project was to protect farmers from price crash and to eliminate middlemen. If the market prices were higher than minimum guaranteed price fixed by the federation, it would procure maize from farmers at the prevailing market price. In case of price crash, farmers would get agreed price of Rs. 525 a quintal. Moreover, farmers have the right to sell their produce in open market also. To ensure quality, the federation would also extend technical assistance and supply of various inputs to farmers for getting better yield with good quality.
