Excise officials seize 42 kg of ganja

KOLLAM, JAN. 9. Following a tip off, sleuths from the Chathannur Excise Circle today seized 42 kg of ganja from a shed at Ezhukone.

The Inspector B. Suresh, who led the excise team, said the seizure was estimated to fetch Rs. 25 lakhs in the dope market. Interestingly, the seizure was made from the premises of Prasannan who was arrested by the same team three months ago from Chathannur while allegedly transporting ganja for sale.

Prasannan was out on bail last week. According to the tip off, soon after he was released on bail, Prasannan went to Andhra Pradesh and returned on Saturday by the Thiruvananthapuram Mail. He alighted at Changanasery and from there took the dope by car and hid it in a shed in a property owned by him at Ezhukone.

This morning when the Excise sleuths swooped on the shed at dawn, Prasannan took to his heels and vanished. The dope was then brought to the Chathannur excise office and a case registered against Prasannan.

During the past five months, the Excise team registered 14 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

Mr. Suresh said that investigations into the ganja seizures conducted by the team had revealed that Andhra Pradesh had turned out to be a major source of ganja supply to the State. The supplies reaching the State are from the Akampalli forest areas of Warangal district in Andhra Pradesh.
