Ministerial team back from Andamans
By Our Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD,
JAN. 9.
A high-level team which visited the tsunami-struck Andaman and Nicobar Islands, returned to the State capital on Sunday after ascertaining the well-being of the Telugus there.
The team comprising Ministers -- D. Prasada Rao (Revenue) and G. Surya Rao (Animal Husbandry) -- and IAS officers -- M.G. Gopal and K. Devanand -- also handed over a cheque for Rs. 25 lakhs on behalf of the State Government to the Lt. Governor of the islands, Shriram Tipsey, for relief and rehabilitation works.
According to a press release, people complained that while ships were plying to Chennai and Kolkata, not a single ship was available to ferry the Telugus to Visakhapatnam. They urged the team to arrange a trip or two from the Andamans to Visakhapatnam so that the women and children could be sent home until rehabilitation works were completed.
