HYDERABAD, JAN. 9. Amid divergent views being expressed by its members, the Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission headed by Chairman, P. Ramulu, will be holding its crucial meeting on Monday to finalise the date for holding the Group I main examination which had been put off after the Andhra Pradesh Administrative Tribunal direction. The APAT direction to bring down the cut-off mark for the main examinations from 67 to 61 provided an opportunity for at least 21,000 new candidates to take a shot at the prestigious test. The examination schedule widely publicised by the Commission for the last two months went haywire after the tribunal directive. The main examinations to be attended by 29,000 candidates were scheduled to commence from January 19. Monday's meeting assumes significance in the backdrop of some members expressing the view that the examination should be held after three months to give the newcomers a fair chance to compete with those who had already qualified for the mains. The chairman is of the opinion that the examination should be conducted in February.
Crucial meeting
However, a senior member of the Commission, C. Chandrasekhar, has written to the chairman, suggesting that the examination be held only after 90 days. Mr. Chandrasekhar told The Hindu on Sunday that the Commission meeting would take a final decision on the schedule. "The issue would come up for voting among the members and the dates would be finalised after the meeting." A majority of the qualified candidates, who had been preparing for the examination for well over a year, now are insisting that there should be no further delay. They reason that a majority of them hail from rural areas and are not in a position to spend more on their coaching and stay in the city. The newly eligible candidates want the authorities to give them sufficient time for preparation.
