MRPS threatens mass movement
Talking to newsmen on Sunday, they accused the Government of lacking sincerity to resolve the SC quota categorisation issue. They urged the Government to ensure a presidential ordinance bringing the categorisation into force. They said the Congress Government passed a unanimous resolution by the Assembly for the quota break-up and washed off its hands. On the other hand, a Government order was issued withdrawing the quota break-up. They said when the Tamil Nadu and Karnataka States could enhance the quota to 64 and 68 per cent despite the Supreme Court ceiling of 50 per cent, what prevented the Andhra Pradesh from providing constitutional support to the categorisation.

Talking to newsmen here last night, the Minister hinted at replacing the existing system which was adding to traffic snarls during fee collection. The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy was keen on improving roads in two to three years at a cost of Rs. 3,000 crores to ensure better transport facility in the rural areas, the Minister said.
Seer to tour world for peace
At a press conference here on Sunday, the Jeeyar Educational Trust (JET) vice-chairman, Chintala Ramachandra Reddy, said the tour would begin on February 20. He said the JET and Vikasa Tarangini were undertaking relief and rehabilitation work in tsunami-affected villages of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. A significant part of the `yagnam' would be the writing of `Om Namo Venkatesa' mantra about 7,000 crore times in all languages involving the devotees across the nation.
Office-bearers elected
At the annual general body meeting of the Hyderabad unit of APMSRU, the new office-bearers for the year 2005 were elected. Led by H.V. Narlekar, who was retained as president, the members spoke of how the prices of life-saving drugs would hit the roof if the patent Act was amended. Other office-bearers elected include: Karaneshwar, Vijayabhaskara Reddy and A.K. Joshi, vice-president, secretary and treasurer respectively, Yousuf Hyder, joint secretary, K. Sriram Murthy and Sankaranarayana, convenors of the Unorganised Sector Group and the Organised Sector Group, respectively.
MP's plea to YSR
In a letter to Dr. Reddy, the MP said the police had demolished on January 6 about 5,000 huts put up by shelterless poor people at Gangastan, Tellayya Cheruvu, Kanteswaravagu Gadda and Nagaram. The CPI(M) leader alleged that some Telugu Desam leaders, businessmen and other prominent persons had grabbed Kareejkatha land and converted it into pattas. He named four landgrabbers in the letter.
Woman's death triggers protest
Alleging that she died due to negligence of the Government doctor, irate villagers of Nakkagudem, the native place of the victim, and the activists of the Telugu Desam and the Communist Party of India staged a rasta roko with the body. The vehicular traffic came to a standstill following the protest. As the situation went out of control, officials rushed to Mellacharvu to sort out the problem. The villagers withdrew the protest when the officials offered Rs.10,000 as an immediate relief and assured the victim's relatives of depositing Rs.30,000 each against the names of her three daughters, according to reports.
Pratighatana leader arrested
KARIMNAGAR: The CPI-ML Praja Prathigatana group legal organiser, Berugu Swamy alias Shyam (25), was arrested by the police from Pankena village of Mahadevpur mandal on Saturday evening. A 9 mm pistol was recovered from his possession. The Godavarikhani ASP, Ch. Srikanth, told newsmen on Sunday that a police party went to the village on a routine visit and on seeing the police, Swamy along with another organiser, Prasad alias Thirupathi, who were organising a meeting, took to heels. When the police pursued them, Swamy gave himself up by dropping his weapon. The police recovered the Chinese- made pistol with five live rounds. Swamy had worked with the Janashakthi group in early 2004 and fell in love with a minor girl of Golla Botharam village in Warangal district and married her. The Janashakthi had expelled him from the party for eloping with the girl. Later, he along with his wife joined the Praja Prathigatana. He was involved in seven cases of extortion, kidnapping and intimidation.

Ex-Chief Justice of HC dead
He joined the Hyderabad Civil Service and later became the munsiff magistrate and served as High Court Judge for 14 years before being elevated as Chief Justice in 1969. He had a distinguished career in judicial service, spanning more than four decades, including four years as the Judge of World Bank Tribunal. He was conferred the honorary degree of doctor of laws by Kakatiya University.
